❤️‍🩹 Why We Should Stop Fixing Our Weaknesses

read time: 4 minutes

Welcome back to The Checkpoint, a newsletter where, every Monday, we pause, reflect, and level up our lives.

☑️ Today's Summary:

  • I tell you about a very powerful concept of "Nine Lies About Work"
  • We explore why we shouldn't adapt people's work to them but the other way around
  • I'll give you my interpretation of this concept in day-to-day life: we should start fostering our strengths

😁 Why Strengths Matter More Than Weaknesses

Hey Reader!

So, I’ve got a confession: I’m terrified of flying. On a recent trip from Madrid to Edinburgh, I decided to distract myself by reading Nine Lies About Work. My plan was simple—make it through the first chapter during takeoff. But here’s the thing: once I started, I couldn’t stop. By the time we landed, I’d devoured the whole book.

One idea from Chapter 4 hit me so hard, that I had to share it with you: the myth that we’re supposed to be "well-rounded." Turns out, trying to fix every flaw might actually hold us back.

In this chapter, Buckingham and Goodall explore a study by Selection Research about what makes a great pub manager. Spoiler alert: there’s no magic formula.

The study found no consistent pattern among successful managers' characteristics. Each one excelled by developing their own unique set of skills.

The takeaway? We shouldn’t force people to adapt to the job—they thrive when the job adapts to them.

Here’s how this applies to our daily lives: instead of obsessing over fixing weaknesses, we should double down on our strengths.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying we shouldn’t work on our flaws—especially if they’re hurting us or others. But there’s a point of diminishing returns where fixing those flaws just leads to frustration.

For example, here’s something personal: I don’t feel emotions super intensely.

  • I don’t get angry easily.
  • When I’m sad, I rarely cry.
  • And while I’m happy, I’m not usually the "jumping-for-joy" type.

For years, I saw this as a problem and tried to "fix" it. I’ve made progress, but no matter how hard I worked, I couldn’t completely change. It was frustrating.

But with this new mindset, I’ve realized I’ve done enough to address the issue. My emotions don’t hurt my relationships. Now, I’m flipping the script and seeing it as a strength:

  • I stay calm in tough conversations.
  • I can empathize without getting overwhelmed.
  • When someone’s hurt, I’m a solid, steady foundation.

💡How to apply this concept TODAY:

Think about your biggest "weakness"—in your life or your career. Now ask yourself: Have I hit the point where further improvement isn’t worth the stress? If so, how can you turn it into a strength?

Examples:

"I procrastinate a lot, but I’ve learned to work efficiently for 40 hours a week. Now, I use my procrastination time to experiment with spontaneous plans."

"I have social anxiety. But since I can handle events when needed, I use my downtime to explore solo hobbies."

"I’m a control freak. But I’ve started planning my relaxation time to avoid burnout—and it works!"
