But hereās the thing: once I started, I couldnāt stop. By the time we landed, Iād devoured the whole book. One idea from Chapter 4 hit me so hard, that I had to share it with you: the myth that weāre supposed to be "well-rounded." Turns out, trying to fix every flaw might actually hold us back.
In this chapter, Buckingham and Goodall explore a study by Selection Research about what makes a great pub manager. Spoiler alert: thereās no magic formula. The study found no consistent pattern among successful managers' characteristics. Each one excelled by developing their own unique set of skills. The takeaway? We shouldnāt force people to adapt to the jobāthey thrive when the job adapts to them. Hereās how this applies to our daily lives: instead of obsessing over fixing weaknesses, we should double down on our strengths. Now, donāt get me wrong. Iām not saying we shouldnāt work on our flawsāespecially if theyāre hurting us or others. But thereās a point of diminishing returns where fixing those flaws just leads to frustration. For example, hereās something personal: I donāt feel emotions super intensely.
For years, I saw this as a problem and tried to "fix" it. Iāve made progress, but no matter how hard I worked, I couldnāt completely change. It was frustrating. But with this new mindset, Iāve realized Iāve done enough to address the issue. My emotions donāt hurt my relationships. Now, Iām flipping the script and seeing it as a strength:
